About Arachnids, by Cathryn Sill, Illustrated by John Sill

Topics – spiders, insects

Summary – This isn’t necessarily a summer nature book, but I just finished reading Charlotte’s Web with my dauAbout Arachnidsghters and have been fascinated by spiders. In About Arachnids, Cathryn Sills describes the spectrum of arachnids from tiny Velvet Mites to Sculptured Centuroides Scorpions. Her simple facts are accompanied by her husband John’s beautiful illustrations. This is one in a series of “About” books written by the husband-wife team, which include Fish, Reptiles, Mammals and Amphibians. Their other terrific series is “Habitat” books, which are also published by the wonderful nature publisher, Peachtree. She is a grade school teacher and obviously understands how to present interesting information in a clear, compelling way to her audience, and his illustrations have lovely naturalistic detail. The extra information on each fact or specific arachnid at the end is great for those who want to learn more.

Suggested Ages –
This book is perfect for grade school readers – the youngest will connect with the simple facts and illustrations, and the older ones can learn more from the additional information included at the end of the text.
